Reading Wikipedia For Fun

I have heard some people say they randomly read Wikipedia pages. That is one way to increase your knowledge but does not sound fun. How about making it a game?

Try Wikipedia Race to a Destination!

It’s a fun, educational game that gets my kids excited about learning and using the web. The concept is simple: we race to a destination article, but the path is anything but straightforward!  Here’s how we play:

  1. Random Start: Head to “wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random” in your browser for a surprise article.
  2. Destination Showdown: Take turns picking a topic (ex: kangaroo) or use another random page.
  3. Click-Off!: Race to the chosen article using only in-article links (no sidebar!).

The winner is whoever gets to the destination article first. However, it’s not just about winning! Explore unexpected discoveries along the way.  Ancient Egypt might lead to constellations – a cool detour!

This game hones research skills and sparks curiosity.  Suddenly, screen time becomes a springboard for learning!

Bonus Tips:

  • Skip red links (dead ends).
  • Think of broad categories for connections.
  • Discuss fun facts you find.
  • Keep it light and celebrate discoveries!
